First time trail riding.

Post by Gripper1974 »

As my Vstrom is my first adventure style bike and I'm an ABR virgin. Can anyone recomend an easy/ not to taxing trail route in south Yorkshire ( near Sheffield ). I know I sound like a ponce but I've got to start somewhere

First tip - don't go alone! If you fall and break the bike or your body you may never ride again!

Contact the local ABR group and they will share knowledge of the area then join them on a weekend ride out.

Enjoy but ride safe:)

As Graham says,go with some others in your area, I was a virgin like you last year, then a trip out with a couple of handsome chaps from the EAB and I was hooked :)

Hi mate, and welcome aboard.
As the guys say above, I would just add that whoever you go out with, make sure they know that you're new to the discipline's,and take your time - don't feel pressured into trying too hard, i.e. self imposed for the fear of spoiling someone's day by taking your time.
The guys up your neck of the woods are a top bunch, with years of experience, and I'm sure that they will take excellent care of you.

The last thing I'd say is prepare yourself for the addiction...... it really is that good!
Have fun, now go out and get dirty.
The end of the road is the start of the fun

Hiya from the posh side of Barnsley :silly:
I see you have the 1000 Strom so quite a heavy bike for trails but I am sure we can find you some to play on.
We have had quite a bit of rain of late so it has made even some of the easier trails 'entertaining'

What tyres have you got on the bike?

As said before try not to do the trails on your own.

At the moment I've got metzler tourance on, but that's because I've only done road riding with my mrs on the back and a shed load of luggage. I've been looking at a set of continental escape or TKC80's though.

Hi Gripper, I`m off abroad on a job on Sunday night for a week ( could be longer) but as soon as I`m back I`m happy to take you out for a few hours on some easy lanes in the Peaks.
If you want to keep your Tourances on for now I know some lanes that will be fine for these.
You will need something a bit Knobblier though if you get a taste for it.
Gaz

Will PM you my number

Some very good advice from the lads above
Also bear in mind that you will drop yer bike, you may get some damage to yerself, so wear some armour and good boots.Carry a phone and a few spares maybe a pump for puntures = I even have a tow strap under me seat
I also am available for midweek escorted tours ( free ) as it does get a little busy at weekends and I prefer it a bit less crowded
Also get a landranger map of the area and get it up to date
There are folk as well as police that will help releave you of dosh, in fines, if you go where you shouldnt. Have a look at the the definative map of derbyshire for guidance = thats on the net
Have a great safe time in this lovely area = and try to be as nice to the locals/walkers as you can = even though yer will get abusive looks and coments. They are our lanes and trails as just as much as "theirs"

I too have a DL1000 and would be interested in doing some trails for the first time. Let me know if you organise something and would like some company. Got trailwings on the bike.
