With bigger wheels and longer suspension travel a trail bike needs a higher headstock c/w a road bike so any conversion of this type is going to be compromised. In this case, the limited fork travel left suggests a compromise too far for any serious off road use.
But each to his own.

So you got lucky with the sizing, and knowing it was exactly what you wanted. Or perhaps you had tried it on in a local shop. Might ask yourself what you are going to do when they're not there. If I am doing you an injustice I appologies. Fair point though on mail order of specialised kit in general...

Apart from the massive price difference I can not think of one single reason why I would choose the old knocker over the new one
I'm not even sure there is any worthwhile comparison to be had.
