i don't know what japanese manufacturers put in their brake pads, but oem brake pads for motocross bikes is the way to go - they outlast the after market ones noticeably. can't comment the bmw ones though. but you must understand that the bmw logo itself adds at least 15 respect points for the rider...

i wear some sort of sportsmen base layers, fully sleeved, which very well wicks the sweat out, so i feel dry even in the hottest day

you can say that mx bike is not a 250 kg beemer, but the fundamentals and riding technique are the same (you can't change the laws of physics) http://motocross.transworld.net/category/riding-tips/ they have a few training dvds as well, which are very recommended to watch after riding offroad. helps ...

all planes are riveted - welding does not withstand vibrations
p.s. the weld itself is much stronger than rivets, but welding process weakens the material around the weld joint.
