Ship bike to Halifax Canada and ride across Canada to Alaska to the Pacific coast, then follow coast south to Califorina and Route 66 back to the west coast taking in a couple of National parks en route. Ship bike back home. Wishful thinking

Winter months best time. Yes they can be seen from Scotland (and also sometimes here in N.Ireland) The further north the better.
There is probably a web site that gives you info on it (best times etc)
