I definitely think top opening is the way to go, side opening inevitably means the half the contents end up on the ground while you try and balance one legged with your other knee supporting the lid. I can vouch for the cpc boxes I've got them on my Honda, its been on the side on them and they're strong enough. Not top loading though.
