Just received a German Army Goretex jacket I ordered a few days ago.
I got fed up trying to find a waterproof jacket that was big enough and long enough to go over my down jacket. I had been trying to find something fairly cheap in outdoors shops, but none of them were long enough to cover the bottom of the down jacket even if they were big enough to go over the down jacket without compressing it.
Brainwave, see if I could find a large military jacket at a reasonable price. I was surprised to discover that there are loads of them for sale, just google 'army goretex jackets'.
The jacket I have just received looks brand new and is much better quality than I expected. It is unlined tape sealed goretex and is the sort of length you used to get in a waterproof jacket, about mid to lower thigh. It is not too heavy to pack down to a reasonable size but seems more than strong enough for winter camping and rolling around in the mud.
Cost of the German army jackets varies from about £25 upwards, I paid £31.98 including postage for what is effectively a new jacket.
Well worth looking at army surplus if you are looking for a waterproof jacket.
